Painting & Finishing Tips

Painting and finishes tips

We get alot of customers asking the best paint to use and tips on how to add wording etc. so we have put together a little blog post to give you some advice from our personal experience crafting

Do I need to prime first?

Not if you don't want to, the wood is ready for you to paint in your chosen colour/s and build up the coats until the desired coverage is reached

Do I need to sand or prepare the wood?

All our 18mm router products are sanded before sending out but you can do some sanding inbetween painting for a super smooth finish on both the edges and to eliminate brush marks on the front and/or back

We have another blog on top tips for getting the best finish from our router products.

Our laser products don't need any preparation only light sanding inbetween coats of paint to keep it nice and smooth and elimate brush strokes

What paints are best to use?

We highly recommend acrylic paints as they are great to work with and give a 2 coat coverage. Some colours may need 3 coats such as white or if you like to give it an extra coat for that bit of extra coverage but this is personal preference.

Please do have a look at our paint section on the website HERE as we offer a large range of paints, glitter paints, mod podges, lacquers and more!

You can also use tester pots of emulsion paint - we do find these a bit thick especially for detailed painting but worth a try for that specific colour a customer or yourself wants or to match an item in with your room decor!

Larger items its ideal to use either a large paint brush or a roller brush for a quicker more even coverage

Spray paints for wood are also good for larger items and smaller items you are doing all the same colour. This is good for speed and once you get the knack is easy to do.

What is the best thing to paint with?

Different brushes etc will be good for different items and so with trial and error you will find what works for you.

Sponge brushes and rollers help elimate brush marks when painting a solid colour on a medium- large surface. They also help to speed up the painting process!

You can get a variety of sized and different type of bristles for brushes and again you will find which you like and what works best for you.

Smaller very fine brushes are perfect for detailed painting.

How do I add wording?

One option is Vinyl

You can get vinyl quotes or personalised cut to order vinyl from a lot of business - many on facebook. You can also get your own little vinyl machine if its something you start doing a lot of.

All these items of ours are done with vinyl wording

Another option is hand stamping

You can buy a variety of stamps including individual letters stamps, quote stamps, shapes, borders and more! plus a variety of different coloured inks.

All these items of ours are done with hand stamping

You can also use Uniball gel pens

Free hand the writing onto your makes. A good effect is to do little balls/circles at the ends of each letter and the joins!

Plus you can also finish your makes with a simple dot dash border. It makes a real difference and adds that finishing touch

You can even try doing a dot dot border too!

These uniball gel pens are ideal to use due to the steady flow of ink that comes out but Posca pens in a fine tip are also recommended by crafters, You can find them in you local craft stores or on Ebay

More tips on using gel pens on our etched items see HERE

Finishing your items

You will want to protect your items and your work and lacquer sprays are a great item to use. They are easy to apply and give a good even coverage.

We have these on the website and they are available in matt and gloss effect HERE
